Autumn at the Grange 2014

I can’t say enough about how beautiful the grounds are looking in all the gardens we have landscaped surrounding the perimeter of the new amphitheater.  We still have work to do; such as, removing some hosta from the water wheel garden and replacing with other plants to give more variety;  then, there is the Washington Walk that runs along the length of the amphitheater to the water wheel garden and into the woods where Roy and our garden club have cleared vines and ...

August at the Grange

A really good crowd of Gardeners–human and canine–arrived for the August cleanup of The Grange from near and far. I guess Sandy Beal came the distance from New Castle, Delaware, and was among the last to leave.  Sandy didn’t let her fused spine stop her.  She sat on the ground, found a good position and weeded. Amazing! Also great to see one of our new provisional members–Liz Mercogliano in the mix.

All our new plantings are so lush and green thanks ...

The Gift of Spring

Sometime back in May, we asked for photos of what was blooming in your garden.  Several of you did send pictures. This spring, in the view from my sun porch where my husband and I have again returned after this long winter, we have a very old wisteria vine that we now have propped up with a board because it is so heavy. It bends down to say hello to the very old azaleas that line the front of our house.  We have ...

A Grand Finale

What an exciting June show.  Lots of entries. Classes were interesting and camaraderie was there among the members.  Someone remarked that she was glad to see so much visiting going on at the end of the show.

Many of you have either run the flower show committee or worked as a member of the committee so you know what it takes to put on one of our flower shows.   The tables and supplies come by truck from Chester where everything ...

Ancient Trees at The Grange

The planting and transplanting continue at The Grange. When we arrived in June, many thought the two dwarf crepe myrtles in the entrance garden at the bottom of Mansion Walk had met their demise after our grueling winter; but, we should have known that these 4-yr-olds had a lot of fight left in them. We dug around the shrub roots and there at the base was green. I hope when we go back in July, we will see some new ...

“Why We Should Worry About LNG”

As the US begins to produce more shale gas from fracking, the possibility of selling it to markets abroad at a higher profit is creating new dilemmas for environmentalists. Not only is the liquefaction process a potentially hazardous one, but the opening up of export markets will create a more demand for fracked gas with increased environmental impact. The current geopolitical situation, particularly ...
