New Castle 2013

A big thanks to Sandy Beale who arranged a tour for our club to discover Old New Castle, Delaware with the help of docents and Sandy leading the way around her town. According to the internet, New Castle is the oldest, continuously occupied town in the Delaware Valley. We not only visited a few of the historic homes and the Old Court House—all interesting– but we also saw some terrific gardens—a real treat.

We especially enjoyed being led through the ARASAPHA Garden Club Native ...

Grange Workday – July 2013

Our workday at the Grange in July was busy and fun as usual. We worked for almost two hours and were hanging out together chit-chatting and saying our good byes when a butterfly lighted on Cathy Decker’s shoulder. Wyn quickly dug out her cell phone to capture the moment as Michele looked on. We realized that we were standing in front of two large butterfly bushes—lavender and white. We watched and observed as many butterflies visited the white-bloom variety more ...

This year the Gardeners were excited to hear that we had once again won the Dorothy Buckley Zantzinger Award (otherwise know as the trophy with the antler handles, named after Stewart Spahr’s Aunt) for most points in Horticulture and Artistic Competitive Classes at the Philadelphia International Flower Show! Members worked diligently on the beautifully executed Club Entry, a Shop Window, under the Leadership of Eileen Longacre and Wyn Coghlan. Gardeners Outreach -Winter 2012

In the last months of 2012, the Gardeners participated in two outreach projects. The first was the decorating of Woodford House in Fairmount Park in November. We were asked to return after a very successful outing last year- this year’s Theme was Rebecca Frank’s tea, and as you can see, the Gardeners did a wonderful job carrying out the theme in the kitchen, dining room and staircase!

Then in our annual Greens workshop, held at the Church of the Redeemer at ...

Flowers for the Ronald McDonald House

On Monday, November 5th, Betsy Crowell, Karen Helm and Michele Spence made the trip in to The Ronald McDonald House in Philadelphia to adorn the public spaces with fresh flower arrangements and bouquets. Karen had purchased the majority of the flowers at Trader Joes on Sunday, and Betsy and Michele each added some more, so that we were able to fill ample vases and brighten up the House. Here are some photos from our trip:

  • Betsy and Michele working their magic.
  • Our ...

Concourse Lake 2012

On Saturday, October 13, The Gardeners along with other Zone V garden clubs, school children, friends and members of the Concourse Lake community gathered to plant over 15,000 bulbs in preparation for the GCA Centennial that we will celebrate in the Spring.

All gardeners are natural organizers in my opinion. They love to plan and layout their gardens. That said, many of the leaders in the Zone V garden clubs put those organizational skills to work to not only bring the ...

Protected: October Meeting 2012

The Gardeners gathered at the historic Grange mansion and the outbuilding stable for their first flower show of the 2012/2013 year. The Gardeners have a special relationship with The Grange in Havertown as this is our fourth year of gardening on this 10-acre site to help bring back a prominent property. The buildings were developed in stages after the property was bought in 1682. The remaining 10 acres of the 86,024-acre estate was purchased by Haverford Township for preservation. The ...

Protected: The Gardeners Annual Party

The Gardener’s Annual Fundraising Party was Friday night, October 5, and a fun time was had by all. Sandra and Keith Hudson hosted about 65 Gardeners and spouses. After coming up a walkway lined with lanterns, we were greeted with a lovely Pimms cup punch-bowl in the foyer. Sandra arranged for many special touches: a beautiful setting, a melodious piano player, car valet and lovely weather.
We all enjoyed the decorations, delicious food prepared by the executive committee, the balloon wine auction, ...
