On Saturday, October 13, The Gardeners along with other Zone V garden clubs, school children, friends and members of the Concourse Lake community gathered to plant over 15,000 bulbs in preparation for the GCA Centennial that we will celebrate in the Spring.

All gardeners are natural organizers in my opinion. They love to plan and layout their gardens. That said, many of the leaders in the Zone V garden clubs put those organizational skills to work to not only bring the garden clubs together for this huge task on Saturday, but also to work with the Fairmount Park folks to layout the beds around the lake so the laborers could do preliminary digging of these planned beds. The Zone V leaders put up signs that pointed the garden clubs to their specific planting areas where their bulbs lay in cardboard boxes awaiting our arrival. Tools were also supplied for this event—long handled shovels, trowels, rakes, etc. It was amazing to see so many working together. The bulbs were in their growing place in about an hour and a half.

Kudos must go to so many in Zone 5 and the Bulb Planting Committee. To make our task more comfortable, there was a groaning refreshment table and the hot coffee tasted so good on that cold sunny Saturday. The Gardeners were especially proud to be part of this day, as we listened to Betsy Crowell talk in memory of Helen Edwards and her estate that provided the funds for these bulbs. We all left satisfied and happy to be part of the camaraderie of the morning.
