Sorry If you missed our tour of Awbry Arboretum and Stenton on Monday, October 2.  It was wonderful.  Who knew that Awbry had over 56 acres in the middle of Germantown with ancient trees, Awbury Arboretum, located in Germantown with walking trails, historic homes, and an agricultural village. After Henry Cope, a wealthy Quaker shipping merchant and philanthropist, built his stone Gothic summer estate in 1852

After our guided tour which included much walking, we ate our lunch at picnic table under the shade of some of these ancient trees.

Our adventure continued a short distance away from the Awbry Arboretum to Stenton.

The National Society of the Colonial Dames of America in The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, an organization dedicated to patriotic services and historical activities in America. Offered the chance to save Stenton in 1899, they took on the task and for the last 100 years have been custodians.  Several of our garden club members are involved in the task of keeping Stention maintained through financial support and just dedicating themselves to research and maintenance.
