June 2023 Stoneleigh

There were seven of us weeding yesterday–Sandy Beale, Bonnie Buchak, Judi Garst, Michele Jameson, Julie Roegge, Presley Schwinn and Connie Stelzenmuller. The weather was wonderful despite the air quality resulting from fires in Canada and NJ.  We gathered in the beginning as usual for instructions from Sam Nestory and Kristen Ryan, the Stoneleigh staff, about which weeds to pull.  There are always some freebie plants, not weeds, to transplant into our own gardens.

While listening to the instruction, we did have some laughs over the common names of these weeds:

-Lettuce from Hell/Thistle: Cirsium arvense
-Common Nipplewort: Lapsana communis
Weedy Geranium/Herb Robert: Geranium robertanium
-Smart Weed: Member of the Polygonaceae family

Now you know why the Latin names are so important.
