October at Stoneleigh

I’m giving thank-you’s to Margot Patterson, Bonnie Buchak, Judy Shekmar, Judi Garst and Michele Spence, who made it to the Stoneleigh work day today, Tuesday, October 5. We enjoyed one another.

Unfortunately, we didn’t have Sandy Beale, our chair or Sarah Collier our vice chair.  Sandy fell backward down a set of stairs on her backside and banged herself up.  Sarah is still recovering from her fall and must wear her collar for another two months.

For those of you who couldn’t make it, we have your back.  When you’re sick, have family obligations or the like, know that there will be a group from the club that will be there for you.  That’s what makes The Gardeners the community that it is.

The October morning at Stoneleigh was reaching a dew point, but no rain.  The ground was soft and wonderful to weed.  We worked mainly on the gardens on each side of the path at the Stoneleigh entrance.

Sam Nestory, head of the volunteers, and Lindsey Laban, seasonal horticulturalist, greeted us and answered our personal home garden questions before we began our service.  We congratulated Lindsey who has now been hired as a full-time Stoneleigh employee.  Ethan Kauffman, the director of Stoneleigh, was riding by on his garden vehicle, busy depositing plants, but had time to stop to say hello and give us his thank-you’s for our service.

Bonnie and I walked back to look at the progress on the Bodine Catalpa Court project.  It’s impressive.  Across from the project is a substantial picnic-type structure that would be great for members to gather for a brown bag lunch.  More to come on this later.

Here are some photos that I took:

I have been looking at your website and am very impressed with the information and kind attitude your club projects. It’s a delightful and educational read.
Which brings me to a question. You have articles on your cite on horticulture nomenclature and horticulture preparation by J. Moore and D. Donaldson. Would it be okay for me to use them in our club’s newsletter and /or workshops? We are The Garden Club of Johnstown, PA, District VI, GCFP & NGC.
    Many thanks,
    Charlotte Crissey
