The Gardeners Pollinator Project

The Gardeners Pollinator Project
New Eagle School Fall 2013

This year, The Gardeners Garden Club gave New Eagle Elementary School in Wayne PA a grant of a Pollinator Partnership Kit. We had partnered with their “enviromaniacs” conservation club in the Spring and wanted to continue the relationship with the school.

Part of the fun of giving the grant was being able to participate in a hands on lesson in September, when six Gardeners and two community members did a pollinator presentation to Mrs Robinson’s second grade class. Barbara Geltosky explained about pollinators and read from a book about them, and showed a variety of pollinator plants and blossoms. Deb Donaldson and Lyn Marinchak helped with the plants. Joan Roberts told the children about flowers and hummingbirds, and Cathy Decker brought her mason bee house, which was a huge hit. But they all seemed to have the most fun with Cricket Robert’s collection of butterfly chrysalises and caterpillars, two of which escaped, to the delight of the students.

We left them with 24 seedlings of salvia coral nymph so that each student could have a pollinator plant to take home. The letters they wrote thanking us were just adorable! We are looking forward to returning in the Spring. We had more cute pictures of the class, but due to privacy issues, we cannot share them.
